The law states that employee exposure to hazardous substances must be prevented or reduced as much as possible and information and instruction must be provided on the risks and measures.
For a number of hazardous substances, legal limit values have been established in the form of a limit value, formerly called the “Maximum Acceptable Concentration, the MAC value.” Companies are obliged to set their own limit values and develop safe working methods for hazardous substances for which the government has not set a limit value.
A large number of hazardous substances can be identified by the label placed on the package by the manufacturer. However, these labels provide only basic information about risks and control measures. The safety data sheets that the manufacturer or a supplier must make available to the professional user must contain additional information in order to adequately protect workers and the environment.
Employees should therefore not only be aware of the risks in this area, but also act appropriately on the information available to them.
